Accelerated Completion of the Kleberg Trail
The Area Two team recommends purchasing the Union Pacific railroad right of way (“ROW”) from I-20 to
the Seagoville city limits, a distance of approximately 2.2 miles. First, it would provide a DART dedicated
bus/rail corridor to the rail station in Pleasant Grove, scheduled to open in 2010. Second, it is
part of the Dallas Parks and Recreation Department’s proposed Seagoville Trail, to be renamed Kleberg Trail. Both uses would encourage
more economic development opportunities . This recommendation is an extension of Catalyst
Project #1 from the West Kleberg Community Plan approved by the Council in April 2007 and would be
accomplished in coordination with the City of Dallas Department of Parks and Recreation and DART.
Status - Phase 1 Completed (Updated 3/21/2011)
On February 9, 2011, Dallas City Council approved a purchase agreement with Union Pacific for right of way for a future Kleberg Trail. The deal includes a $260,000 purchase price, paid by the Office of Economic Development's Public-Private Partnership Fund, $50,000 paid from the 2003 Bond Program, and a donation to the city worth $500,000 by Union Pacific. Design and construction of the trail could be funded in the next capital bond program.
